Hana Human Rights Organization has learned that the death sentence of Naser Bakrzadeh, a 25-year-old Kurdish political prisoner from Orumiyeh, has been overturned for the second time by Branch 39 of the Supreme Court and returned to the Orumiyeh Revolutionary Court for retrial.
Seydad Shirzad, one of Bakrzadeh’s defense lawyers, announced on Saturday, November 1, 2025, that his client’s death sentence had been overturned for the second time by the Supreme Court.
In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, he wrote:
“The death sentence of Naser Bakrzadeh has been overturned for the second time. Today, Saturday, November 1, the ruling was officially communicated to me and my colleagues, Mr. Amir Raeesian and Mr. Nihad Irandoust, by Branch 2 of the Orumiyeh Revolutionary Court. Branch 39 of the Supreme Court overturned the sentence once again due to insufficient investigation and failure to consider evidence proving our client’s innocence, and referred the case back to the Orumiyeh Revolutionary Court for retrial.”
According to received reports, Bakrzadeh’s death sentence had previously been overturned in April 2025 during the appeal stage, and his case was referred to a parallel branch of the Revolutionary Court for further review.
Mr. Bakrzadeh was first sentenced to death in November 2024 by Branch 1 of the Orumiyeh Revolutionary Court on charges of “espionage for Israel and collaboration with Mossad.” That ruling was annulled by the Supreme Court on April 15, 2025.
More recently, he was once again sentenced to death by Branch 2 of the Orumiyeh Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Shahini, on the same charge of “espionage for Israel.”
Naser Bakrzadeh was initially arrested on August 9, 2023, by security forces and temporarily released after several weeks of interrogation upon signing a written commitment. He was re-arrested on January 2, 2024, by security agents and, after months of interrogation at the IRGC Intelligence Detention Center in Al-Mahdi Garrison, Orumiyeh, was transferred to the city’s central prison.
