A Woman Killed in Tehran: Husband Lived Beside Her Body for a Week After Murdering Her

A woman believed to be around 40 years old was killed by her husband in Tehran, HANA Human Rights Organization reports, citing Rokna. The case came to light after residents of a building in Tehran’s Haft Chenar neighborhood alerted police to a foul smell coming from one of the units; officers who entered the apartment found the woman’s body.

According to Rokna, the husband, who has since been arrested, told investigators during questioning that the two had argued over her mahriyeh (dowry), and that he had pushed her, causing her head to strike the ground and kill her. Initial findings also indicate that after killing her, he continued living in the same apartment alongside her body for about a week. The investigation is ongoing.

HANA’s own documentation shows that reported cases of femicide and violence against women rose during the recent war and the internet shutdown imposed by the Islamic Republic. Information gathered by HANA also points to a continued rise in domestic violence and violence against women across various parts of Iran in the period since the war ended.
