Kurdish Political Prisoner Rebwar Marabi’s Prison Sentence Upheld on Appeal

HANA Human Rights Organization reports that on Saturday, June 27, 2026, Branch 36 of the Tehran Province Court of Appeal upheld and communicated the conviction of Rebwar Marabi, a 27-year-old political prisoner from the village of Marab in Kamyaran County, residing in Tehran. He had previously been sentenced by Branch 28 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court to 10 years in prison on charges of “cooperation with Israel,” of which four years have been suspended under the final ruling, leaving six years in ta’zir imprisonment to be served.

According to information received by HANA, Rebwar Marabi was arrested in Tehran on the evening of January 8, 2026, and held in detention for more than a month before being temporarily released on bail pending the conclusion of his trial. Reports also indicate that from the time of his arrest through the end of the proceedings, he was denied access to legal counsel of his choosing, contact with his family, and any adequate opportunity to mount an effective defense.

HANA Human Rights Organization stresses that the proceedings in this case fell short of the minimum guarantees required for a fair criminal trial. Denying the defendant his fundamental rights of defense, particularly access to a lawyer during the initial stages of detention and investigation, casts serious doubt on the legal validity and legitimacy of the entire process, and is incompatible with the Islamic Republic of Iran’s obligations, in particular Article 14 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

HANA notes that the court, as an independent and impartial body, is obligated to exercise effective oversight over the conduct of law enforcement and to guarantee the defendant’s rights of defense. The upholding of this conviction without any meaningful examination of the fundamental violations of those rights reinforces the concern that the judiciary in this case failed to fulfil its independent role in checking the conduct of security institutions and ensuring a fair trial.
