Death Sentence Issued for Arman Marefati Detained in January 2026 Protests

The Hana Human Rights Organization has learned that Arman Marefati, a 30-year-old from Saqqez arrested during the January protests, has been sentenced to death by Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Salavati.

According to received reports, Marefati was detained by security forces between January 8 and 9, 2026, amid the popular uprisings that originated in Tehran. He was subsequently transferred to the Greater Tehran Penitentiary. His case was forwarded to Branch 15 after he was indicted on the charge of “Moharebeh” (enmity against God).

Sources indicate that on May 25, 2026, Marefati was removed from the Greater Tehran Penitentiary under the pretext of a transfer to Ghezel Hesar Prison. However, his current location and condition remain entirely unknown.

Marefati was denied the right to retain an independent lawyer of his choosing throughout all stages of the judicial proceedings. He was officially notified of his death sentence while behind bars.
