According to information received by HANA Human Rights Organization, Saman Zendepil, 40, a citizen from Mahabad with degrees in philosophy and sociology, has been held in detention since June 18, 2026, when he was arrested by security forces in the Bagh Sisseh neighborhood of the city. His family has received no official information about his whereabouts or condition.
Several days have now passed since his arrest, and not one responsible authority has provided any information about the reasons for his detention, possible charges, the body handling his case, or his legal status. His family has been denied any contact or visits since the moment of his arrest, and their efforts to learn about his fate and whereabouts have gone unanswered. At the time of this report, no information has emerged about his access to legal counsel or whether he has been afforded even the most basic fair trial guarantees.
Information received by HANA Human Rights Organization indicates that Saman Zendepil had pre-existing medical conditions prior to his arrest and required ongoing medical care. The continued blackout on his situation, combined with his family’s inability to obtain any information about his health, has deepened serious concerns about his physical condition and safety.
HANA Human Rights Organization, expressing grave concern over the continued lack of any information about Saman Zendepil, calls on the authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran to immediately disclose his whereabouts and condition to his family, ensure his prompt access to legal counsel of his choosing, adequate medical care, and contact with his family, and uphold all fair trial rights and guarantees in accordance with Iran’s international obligations, in particular the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
HANA stresses that from the moment of his arrest, direct responsibility for Saman Zendepil’s life, physical and psychological wellbeing, and the protection of his fundamental rights rests with the detaining institutions and all other responsible authorities, and that any harm or violation of his legal rights will demand full accountability from those institutions.
