According to information received by the Hana Human Rights Organization, at dawn on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, the sentence of Qisas (retribution in kind) for Farzad Sobhani, a 19-year-old from the village of Gerdeh Qit in Naqadeh county, was carried out in Orumiyeh Central Prison. He was only 16 years old at the time of the alleged crime.
Farzad Sobhani was transferred from Naqadeh Prison to solitary confinement in Orumiyeh Central Prison on Monday, July 27, and was executed two days later. As of the preparation of this report, the judicial authorities of the Islamic Republic have not officially announced the execution of the sentence.
Under international law, the age of the individual at the time of the commission of the crime is the determining factor, and the execution of anyone who was under 18 at the time of the crime is absolutely prohibited. The passage of time, the convicted individual reaching adulthood, or the characterization of the punishment as Qisas does not remove this prohibition.
The execution of Farzad Sobhani is a clear instance of a gross violation of the right to life and the arbitrary deprivation of life. The responsibility for this action lies with all officials who, with knowledge of his age, participated in the issuance, confirmation, and execution of the sentence.
