Attendance of a Hana Human Rights Organization Representative at the United Nations Human Rights Council Emergency Session

At today’s emergency session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, held on 3 Bahman 1404 (23 January 2026), the Council addressed the critical situation of protesters in Iran and the crimes committed by the Islamic Republic. Following statements delivered by government representatives and several human rights organizations regarding the atrocities carried out by the Islamic Republic during the protests and the killing of thousands of demonstrators, a condemnation resolution was adopted with 25 votes in favor, 14 abstentions, and 7 votes against. Accordingly, the brutal and inhumane suppression of the recent protests by state security forces was strongly condemned.

During the session, United Nations Special Rapporteurs presented documented evidence regarding the use of “military-grade weapons against peaceful protesters” and the high number of fatalities and detainees, describing these events as one of the “deadliest crackdowns in contemporary history.”

Pursuant to the adopted resolution, the mandate of the United Nations “Fact-Finding Mission” was extended for an additional two years in order to collect and document evidence related to human rights violations and possible crimes against humanity, for use in future international and criminal courts.

It is worth noting that Ghazal Mohtadi attended the session as a representative of the Hana Human Rights Organization and submitted reports to the Special Rapporteurs of the Human Rights Council.

The Hana Human Rights Organization, while once again expressing its condolences to the families of the victims, will continue to devote all efforts to documentation, effective engagement with human rights organizations, and the pursuit of legal mechanisms addressing the grave human rights violations committed by the Islamic Republic.
