HANA Human Rights Organization has received, with profound sorrow and deep concern, the news of the death of Dr. Mohammad Akbari, a cardiology resident at Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences, following a suicide attempt.
This human tragedy cannot be reduced to a mere personal incident. The painful death of this young physician has unfolded against the backdrop of a compounding crisis, one in which war, a devastating economic situation, security pressures, the collapse of livelihoods, discrimination, injustice, psychological burnout, and the dire conditions facing physicians and medical residents in Iran are all deeply intertwined.
HANA emphasizes that the Islamic Republic, through its expansion of repression, structural dysfunction, disregard for human dignity, and failure to provide citizens with even the most basic standards of living and job security, has effectively lost its capacity for responsible governance.
According to available information, arbitrary restrictions, occupational and psychological harassment, discrimination, and the prevailing management climate at Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences, under the leadership of Ali Soroush, are among the factors that must be immediately, independently, and transparently investigated.
While expressing its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Dr. Akbari, HANA holds the Islamic Republic and its responsible institutions accountable for this catastrophic situation. The organization calls for an independent investigation, immediate support for the mental health of medical residents, and an end to the oppressive, discriminatory, and exhausting environment that has come to define Iran’s healthcare and medical education system.
