According to information received by the Hana Human Rights Organization, Shahriar Mohammadi Barimanloo, a 20-year-old wrestler from Bojnourd and one of the detainees of the January 2026 protests, has been sentenced to two years of Ta’zir imprisonment at the appeal stage.
Based on information reaching Hana, Branch 2 of the Bojnourd Revolutionary Court had initially sentenced this athlete to a total of four years and eight months of Ta’zir imprisonment on charges of “assembly and collusion against national security” and “propaganda against the system,” during which time he was denied access to a lawyer. Following an appeal against the verdict and the entry of a lawyer into the case, his sentence was reduced to two years in prison at the appeal stage. The final verdict was communicated to him in July 2026, and he is required to present himself to the prison within one month to serve his sentence.
Shahriar Mohammadi Barimanloo was arrested by security forces on January 9, 2026, without a judicial warrant. According to Hana’s information, he was deprived of access to a lawyer and contact with his family during his eight days of detention, after which he was temporarily released on bail.
The Hana Human Rights Organization emphasizes that denying the accused access to a lawyer during the detention and preliminary trial stages, especially in a case involving security charges, seriously undermines the right to an effective defense and the guarantees of a fair trial.
Furthermore, his arrest without a judicial warrant and the severing of his contact with his family multiply the necessity of examining the legality of his detention and the manner in which his fundamental rights were respected while in custody.
