Hana: Narges Mohammadi, human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, was transferred under security measures to the Intensive Care Unit (CCU) following a severe deterioration in her physical condition and loss of consciousness in Zanjan Prison.
According to reports received by the Hana Human Rights Organization, on Friday, May 1, 2026, Narges Mohammadi, who is serving her sentence in Zanjan Prison, lost consciousness due to severe fluctuations in blood pressure and acute cardiac pain. Following this critical situation, at the insistence of a specialist doctor, she was urgently dispatched from the prison to an external medical center and hospitalized in the CCU.
Mostafa Nili, Ms. Mohammadi’s defense attorney, confirmed the news and announced that despite the alarming condition of this political prisoner, judicial authorities continue to obstruct her medical treatment. According to the report, the Zanjan Province Forensic Medicine Commission has explicitly emphasized the necessity of a “one-month suspension of the sentence” to allow for medical treatment. However, the Zanjan Prosecutor’s Office, in an unlawful approach, has made the execution of this medical order contingent upon receiving instructions from the Tehran Prosecutor’s Office.
Sources close to the family of the human rights activist informed Hana that she has completely lost consciousness at least twice in the past few hours, and her condition is described as “highly critical.” It should be noted that Ms. Mohammadi previously suffered a heart attack on March 24 of this year, but despite more than 130 days passing since her renewed imprisonment, she has been deprived of access to sustained medical care.
The Hana Human Rights Organization, while issuing a grave warning regarding Ms. Mohammadi’s health and life, holds the judiciary and security apparatus of the Islamic Republic responsible for any potential harm that may befall her. Preventing the implementation of the forensic medicine’s recommendation to halt her sentence is a clear manifestation of systematic torture and a blatant violation of international human rights conventions.
