Head of illam University of Medical Sciences Insults Nurses Protesting Low Pay

A number of nurses in illam, meeting with Abbas Gheysvari, head of illam University of Medical Sciences, raised objections over low wages and benefits, mounting financial pressure, and the stark gap between what staff and certain university administrators are paid, according to information received by the Hana Human Rights Organization. Nurses present at the meeting say the university head responded to these grievances by accusing them of slacking off and “stealing from their work.”

One nurse, according to reports received, noted her own monthly pay of around 25 million tomans and asked Gheysvari about the striking gap between nurses’ salaries and the pay drawn by some of the university’s deputy directors, asking how a nurse could be expected to work for such a wage when, as she put it, one deputy director’s monthly pay runs to roughly 600 million tomans.

Those present say Gheysvari responded: “You people don’t do your jobs properly. You shirk your responsibilities.”

The nurses who raised these objections call his remarks insulting and dismissive of the difficult conditions they work under. They say they have faced heavy workloads, staff shortages, and mounting financial strain for years, and are now calling for improved pay and benefits, along with transparency about what the university’s administrators and officials are paid.
