Exclusive Hana Report: Foreign Nationals Held on Espionage Charges in Legal Uncertainty at Sanandaj Central Prison

Hana Human Rights Organization has learned that four foreign nationals are being held in legal limbo at Sanandaj Central Prison.

According to available information, the detainees include two German citizens, one Syrian national, and one Kurdish individual with Iraqi citizenship. They are accused of espionage and are being held without any legal safeguards such as access to an interpreter, legal counsel, or consular assistance.

It is worth noting that in the aftermath of the 12-day war between Iran and Israel, Iran’s security and judicial system has arrested a significant number of people, including foreign nationals, under the broad accusation of spying for Israel. So far, at least four individuals have been executed on this charge without access to proper defense rights or fair trial guarantees, and more cases are currently underway.

Hana Human Rights Organization expresses its deep concern about the legal uncertainty surrounding these four detainees and calls for their access to interpreters, legal assistance, and consular protection in line with the international obligations of the Islamic Republic of Iran under the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.
