Awat Karami Environmental Activist Arbitrarily Arrested by Security Forces

On the evening of Sunday, August 9, 2026, Avat Karami, son of Abdulhamid, an environmental activist involved in the protection of Zagros oak forests, was arrested by security forces at his home in the village of Negel, near Sanandaj, and transferred to an unknown location.

According to published reports, the arrest was carried out in the presence of his elderly mother and several local residents, with officers removing Karami from his home with his hands and feet bound.

Karami has a prior record of arrest and conviction and was previously released from Sanandaj Prison with an electronic ankle monitor in January 2022.
