Kurdish Political Prisoner Verisha Moradi Sentenced to Six Months of Ta’zir Imprisonment

Verisha Moradi, a prominent Kurdish women’s rights activist and political prisoner currently held in the women’s ward of Evin Prison, has been sentenced to six months of Ta’zir imprisonment by a branch of the Tehran Revolutionary Court on charges of “propaganda against the state.”

According to reports received by the Hana Human Rights Organization, this verdict was officially communicated to Ms. Moradi within the past week. The charges in this case stem from the publication of her statements, letters, and writings from within prison, coinciding with the second anniversary of the “Woman, Life, Freedom” revolutionary movement.

Ms. Moradi, who remains in Evin Prison, was previously sentenced to death in a separate case by the Islamic Republic’s judiciary on the heavy charge of “Baghi” (armed rebellion). Following an appeal by her defense attorneys, that death sentence was overturned by the Supreme Court and referred to a parallel branch for retrial.

Since her arrest in August 2023, this Kurdish political prisoner has been repeatedly deprived of her fundamental rights, including access to due process, family visits, and communication with her lawyers. The Hana Human Rights Organization once again expresses its grave concern regarding the lack of judicial transparency, the issuance of retaliatory sentences, and the pressure exerted by security agencies on this political prisoner, calling for the immediate dismissal of all baseless charges against her.
