Hana Report on the Enforced Disappearance of Ali (Mohammad) Barzanji and the Urgent Need for Action to Determine His Fate

According to information obtained by Hana Human Rights Organization, Ali (Mohammad) Barzanji, an independent journalist and political activist from Sanandaj residing in Erbil, has disappeared under suspicious circumstances. Despite the passage of time, no verifiable or credible official information regarding his fate has been made available.

The ongoing and absolute lack of news concerning his status, combined with a total absence of official accountability, has raised serious concerns regarding his physical and mental well-being, his life, and the risk of further violations of his fundamental rights. Legally, this disappearance and the lack of response fall under the category of enforced disappearance. Under international human rights law, this is considered one of the most severe forms of human rights violations, as it simultaneously infringes upon the rights to liberty, personal security, recognition as a person before the law, and in many cases, the right to life and the prohibition of torture and cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment.

Hana Human Rights Organization warns of the grave risks posed by the continuation of this situation. The organization calls for immediate, independent, effective, and transparent action by the relevant authorities to determine the fate and whereabouts of Ali (Mohammad) Barzanji, to guarantee his access to legal protections, and to facilitate communication with his family.
