Four citizens were arbitrarily arrested in Kurdish cities amid a wartime crisis

The Hana Human Rights Organization has learned that four citizens—Soran Sohrabi, Mameh Alinejad, Akam Abubakri, and Wisa Mohammadpour—have been arrested by security forces in the cities of Mahabad and Piranshahr and transferred to undisclosed locations.

According to available information, on 30 March 2026, Wisa Mohammadpour and Akam Abubakri were arrested in Piranshahr without the presentation of any judicial warrant. Soran Sohrabi and Mameh Alinejad were also arrested in Mahabad in late March 2026 and on 24 March 2026, respectively. Reports indicate that these individuals have been transferred to unofficial detention centers run by security institutions in Orumiyeh, and no information has been made available regarding their condition or access to legal counsel and family members.

These cases constitute clear instances of arbitrary detention and enforced disappearance, in violation of Iran’s obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, particularly Articles 7, 9, and 14. Detention in secret facilities further heightens the risk of torture and inhuman or degrading treatment.

The timing of these arrests, coinciding with airstrikes targeting facilities linked to security institutions, has intensified concerns over the detainees’ safety—especially as some detention sites may be located near targeted areas. Under these circumstances, the Islamic Republic of Iran bears direct responsibility for safeguarding the lives of those in custody and must not expose them to the risks of military operations.

The Hana Human Rights Organization calls for the immediate disclosure of their whereabouts, guarantees of access to legal counsel and family, and their transfer to safe and lawful detention facilities. It also urges international bodies to give urgent attention to the situation of detainees amid the ongoing wartime crisis.
