Mamostā Mohammad Khezrnezhad a Kurdish Sunni cleric was granted furlough after serving three years in prison

According to reports received by the Hana Human Rights Organization, Mamostā Mohammad Khezrnezhad, a Kurdish Sunni cleric and one of those arrested during the “Woman, Life, Freedom” uprising in the city of Bukan, was granted furlough for the first time after serving three years in prison. He was released from Sanandaj Central Prison.

Sources close to Hana reported that the furlough began on Saturday, October 18, 2025, and was granted upon posting a heavy bail and with the approval of the Sanandaj Prosecutor’s Office.

According to the received reports, the extension of his furlough is conditional upon compliance with restrictions imposed by security and judicial authorities — including a prohibition on meeting with other Sunni clerics and activists.

Mamostā Khezrnezhad was arrested in November 2022 following a speech he delivered at the funeral of one of the victims of the nationwide protests. He was subsequently taken to the IRGC Intelligence Detention Center and later transferred to Bukan Prison.

After several months of interrogation and detention in security facilities, he was sentenced by the Revolutionary Court to death and 16 years in prison. Following widespread public outrage and domestic and international pressure, the sentence was ultimately reduced to 25 years’ imprisonment.

It is worth noting that over the past three years, this Sunni cleric has been held in harsh conditions in Sanandaj Prison due to his critical positions and religious and social activities.
