According to reports received by the Hana Human Rights Organization, Rezgar Beigzadeh Babamiri, a Kurdish political prisoner currently held in Orumiyeh Prison, has gone on a limited hunger strike. This action is in protest against the pressure exerted by security forces during interrogation, his prolonged uncertainty in prison, and the lack of a fair trial.
Rezgar Beigzadeh Babamiri, a resident of Bukan, was arrested by security forces in April 2023 on charges of providing medication for individuals injured during the nationwide protests of 2022. According to received information, he was subjected to severe psychological and physical pressure during interrogation and is now facing serious charges of “baghi” (armed rebellion) and “moharebeh” (enmity against God), charges that could lead to the death penalty.
According to those close to him, his trial has lacked transparency and fairness, and his lawyer has not been given sufficient opportunity to mount an effective defense. Additionally, the uncertainty surrounding his case and the judiciary’s disregard for his appeals have been key factors leading to this hunger strike.
His family has expressed serious concerns about his physical health, stating that his condition is deteriorating. Previously, reports of violent treatment and security pressure against him during his detention had also been published.
The Hana Human Rights Organization calls for:
• Transparency in the judicial process and a fair trial for Rezgar Beigzadeh Babamiri
• The annulment of his death sentence and a retrial in an impartial and independent court
• Immediate medical attention to ensure his physical well-being
• An end to security pressures and the torture of political prisoners
The case of Rezgar Beigzadeh Babamiri is one of many examples of human rights violations in Iran, where political prisoners are sentenced to severe punishments under security pressure and without adherence to fair trial principles. This situation demands urgent attention and action from international human rights organizations to prevent further violations of fundamental rights against him and other political prisoners.
