On Friday, August 7, 2026, Neda Jalilian, a 26-year-old woman and mother of a four-year-old daughter, was killed by her husband in Malekan county. She was originally from Och Tappeh village in Bukan and resided in Malekan.
According to published information, Neda’s husband severely beat her before hanging her. Following the murder, the suspect attempted to stage the scene to present her death as a suicide, but following an examination of evidence and the official findings of the Forensic Medicine Organization, he was arrested on murder charges.
Reducing such a horrific crime to the vague phrase “family disputes” conceals its gender-based nature. What occurred was not a private argument between two equal individuals, but femicide and the most severe manifestation of patriarchal violence against women. The rhetoric of “family disputes” normalizes violence, effectively marginalizing the perpetrator’s responsibility and the systemic structures that enable its continuation.
In Iran, the absence of comprehensive and effective legislation to prevent domestic violence and provide immediate protection for women leaves them defenseless against violence committed by male family members. This legal vacuum is bound to a legal and jurisprudence system that fails to recognize a woman’s agency, autonomy, and equal, independent identity in many areas, thereby consolidating male authority within the family unit. Within such a structure, domestic violence is often treated as a private matter right up until a murder takes place, with effective intervention occurring only when it is already too late to save the victim.
Hana firmly emphasizes that the murder of Neda Jalilian was not a “family dispute,” but a clear instance of femicide.
