Two political prisoners in Iran were executed on charges of membership in the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (MEK)

According to reports published by Radio Farda, in the early hours of Monday, 30 March 2026, two political prisoners were executed in Iran.

The identities of the two prisoners have been reported as Akbar Daneshvar Kar and Mohammad Taghavi Sangdehi. They had previously been convicted on charges of membership in the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (MEK) and involvement in what were described as “multiple terrorist acts,” accusations that have consistently been surrounded by serious ambiguity. Their death sentences, along with those of four other prisoners (Babak Alipour, Pouya Ghabadi Bistouni, Vahid Bani Amerian, and Abolhassan Montazer) were issued in December 2024.

Mai Sato had previously warned about the lack of fair trial standards in these cases, including allegations of torture to extract confessions and denial of access to legal counsel.

The Hana Human Rights Organization condemns this action and expresses serious concern over the continued issuance and implementation of death sentences in Iran. It emphasizes the necessity for the Islamic Republic of Iran to uphold its international obligations, particularly under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The organization also calls for an immediate halt to the issuance and implementation of death sentences and for full adherence to fair trial standards at all stages of judicial proceedings.
