A report on the killing of Sana Tounesgi a 12-year-old child during the January protests in Hashtgerd

According to reports received by the Hana Human Rights Organization, on the evening of Friday, January 9, 2026, a 12-year-old schoolgirl identified as “Sana Tousangi,” originally from Kermanshah Province and a resident of the city of Hashtgerd, was killed during the popular protests in this city as a result of direct fire with live ammunition by forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

According to the information obtained, on the evening of Friday, January 9, 2026, at around 9:00 p.m., during protest gatherings in the city of Hashtgerd, security forces abruptly cut off street lighting in the area in front of the Governor’s Office and one of the police intelligence centers located on “Ayatollah Khamenei” Boulevard, and then launched a widespread attack on citizens and protesters.

During this crackdown, Sana Tousangi was shot from behind with a Kalashnikov rifle. One bullet struck her lower back and another hit the back of her neck, causing her to lose her life at the scene.

Following her killing, Sana’s body was buried under heavy security measures and in the presence of a large number of plainclothes and security forces at Nazarabad Cemetery in Hashtgerd. Security agencies subjected her family to intense pressure and forced them to sign compulsory pledges. Additionally, contrary to the family’s wishes, they were not allowed to transfer the child’s body to her hometown.

It should be noted that Sana Tousangi was originally from the Kouzaran district of Kermanshah County. She belonged to the Yarsan Kurdish community of the Sanjabi region and to the well-known Tousangi clan.

The Hana Human Rights Organization emphasizes that the use of military weapons against civilians, especially children, constitutes a clear violation of human rights standards and the international obligations of the Islamic Republic of Iran, including the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and calls for independent and transparent investigations and for holding both the perpetrators and those who ordered this act accountable.
