The prison sentence of Kurdish civil activist Hamid Chapati has been increased by the West Azerbaijan Court of Appeal

According to received reports, Hamid Chapati, a Kurdish civil activist from Orumiyeh, has been sentenced by Branch 23 of the West Azerbaijan Court of Appeal to six months in prison. The ruling was officially communicated to him on August 19, 2025.

Reports indicate that on March 12, 2025, Behzad Sarikhanlou, deputy prosecutor of Orumiyeh’s Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office, appealed the initial verdict against Mr. Chapati. Following the referral of the case to the Court of Appeal, Branch 23 increased his prison sentence to six months.

Previously, on February 14, 2025, Mr. Chapati had been tried at the Orumiyeh Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Shahini, and on February 18, the court issued a three-month prison sentence against him on the charge of “propaganda against the state,” which was communicated to his lawyer.

Mr. Chapati was initially arrested on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, after being summoned by phone to the Orumiyeh Security Police for posting critical content on social media. On the same day, following interrogation and the formal announcement of charges at the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office in Orumiyeh, he was released on bail pending trial.
