Acid attack by a man on his wife in Javanrud

According to received reports, in recent days in the city of Javanrud, a 25-year-old woman identified as “Mehri,” daughter of Ahmad and a resident of the village of “Yari,” was subjected to an acid attack by her husband, identified as “Yavar Salehi,” son of Eskandar and a resident of the village of “Lorabi.” The attack occurred following a domestic dispute and took place in front of their 8-year-old child.

According to reports received by the Hana Human Rights Organization, at approximately 8 a.m., the perpetrator took his wife and child outside the urban area and poured acid on his wife’s face, neck, head, and hands.

As a result of this attack, the young woman sustained severe burns and lost vision in one eye. She is currently hospitalized in Golestan Hospital in Kermanshah and is in critical physical condition.

Despite more than ten days having passed since the incident and a formal complaint having been filed by the victim’s family, no effective judicial or law enforcement action has been taken to arrest or interrogate the perpetrator, who still moves freely within the city.

This blatant violation of judicial impartiality and independence, alongside the lack of effective support for the victim of violence, highlights the profound gap in the Islamic Republic of Iran’s criminal justice system in addressing violence against women.

Acid attacks are considered a form of torture, inhuman and degrading treatment, carried out with the intent to inflict physical and psychological harm on the victim. The state’s failure to prevent, investigate, and prosecute such acts constitutes a breach of its obligations to uphold the human rights of women and children.

Furthermore, the presence of the young child during the violent incident will have serious psychological consequences, amounting to a violation of the child’s rights under the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).
