Issuance of a prison sentence for Mamosta Ayat Gholami by the Special Clerical Court of Hamedan

Hana Human Rights Organization has learned that Mamosta Ayat Gholami, a Sunni cleric and former imam of the “Mohammad al-Mustafa” Mosque in Kermanshah, has been sentenced to two years in prison by the Special Clerical Court of Hamedan.

According to this report, the Special Clerical Court tried the Kurdish cleric on charges of “propaganda against the regime, spreading false information, and disturbing public opinion,” and sentenced him to two years of discretionary imprisonment.

The verdict was officially communicated to Mamosta Gholami on Saturday, May 24, 2025. Under Iranian law, one year of the sentence, considered the maximum applicable punishment, is enforceable.

The Sunni cleric has 20 days to appeal the ruling.

Previously, on Wednesday, May 21, 2025 (31 Ordibehesht 1404), Mamosta Gholami had been summoned to the Special Clerical Court in Kermanshah. This summons came after he was temporarily released on bail—amounting to 7 billion rials (approximately 700 million tomans)—on April 25, 2025 (6 Ordibehesht 1404), pending the outcome of judicial proceedings.

Mamosta Gholami, a teacher at a religious seminary, had also been summoned in July 2024 (Tir 1403) by the security division of the Kermanshah Religious Authority and was banned from conducting any religious activities in the mosque by order of that body.

In recent years, he has repeatedly faced pressure from security agencies due to his critical positions, including refusing to endorse government-run elections, signing a statement condemning the execution of Mamosta Mohammad Khazrnajad, protesting the arrests of fellow clerics, denouncing the killing of kolbars (border couriers), and organizing Sunni religious ceremonies.
