According to reports received by the Hana Human Rights Organization, on the morning of Saturday, February 15, 2025, fifty female students at Parvin Etesami School in Shahin Dezh suffered severe poisoning due to a gas leak.
Based on received reports, some students have been transferred to Shahin Dezh Hospital, while others have been taken to a hospital in Orumiyeh.
This incident is just one of many examples of mismanagement and the lack of safety standards in schools across Iran, particularly in Kurdistan.
In recent years, incidents caused by gas poisoning, fires, deteriorating school buildings, and the absence of standard equipment have repeatedly endangered students’ lives. In impoverished provinces such as Kurdistan, Sistan and Baluchestan, and Khuzestan, many schools lack even the most basic safe heating facilities. During cold winters, the use of unsafe heaters and inadequate ventilation has frequently led to tragic and irreversible accidents.
Mismanagement, the lack of budget allocation for education, widespread corruption, and the systemic oppression of marginalized regions like Kurdistan have resulted in dire conditions in schools.
Hana Human Rights Organization calls on international bodies, including the United Nations, UNESCO, and other human rights organizations, to break their silence and respond to this blatant injustice. The continuation of such conditions endangers the lives of thousands of students and turns education in discriminated regions into a dangerous and inaccessible endeavor.
