According to information received by the Hana Human Rights Organization, “Tara Farhangian,” a 21-year-old physical education student from Qorveh, has been sentenced to one year of Ta’zir imprisonment, 31 lashes, and two years of exile by Branch 102 of the Criminal Court of Qorveh.
This verdict was issued under the presiding Judge Hadi Khani and based on the charge of “disrupting public order and peace.”
Simultaneously, another case against Tara Farhangian with the charge of “assembly and collusion to commit crimes against internal security” is being processed in Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court of Qorveh, presided over by Judge Hossein Bigdelou. Based on available information, no verdict has been officially served to her in this case as of yet.
Tara Farhangian, who was a student at Hamedan University at the time of her arrest, was arrested by security forces in Qorveh on January 8, 2026 and was released after approximately three weeks on January 28, 2026.
The Hana Human Rights Organization expresses deep concern over the issuance of this sentence, particularly the punishment of flogging. In international human rights law, flogging as corporal punishment constitutes torture and cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment or punishment. The prohibition of torture under Article 7 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights is absolute and without exception, and no domestic law, criminal charge, or judicial ruling can justify the execution of such a sentence.
The punishment of exile also imposes double pressure on her and her relatives by separating her from her family, university, and living environment.
Hana calls for the revocation of the sentence issued against Tara Farhangian, a definitive halt to the execution of the flogging punishment, and full observance of fair trial guarantees in both of her cases.
