On Thursday, August 7th (16 Mordad in the Iranian calendar), the anniversary of the execution of Reza (Gholamreza) Rasaei, a Kurdish Yarsani political prisoner and one of the detainees of the Jin, Jiyan, Azadi (Women, Life, Freedom) movement, is commemorated. He was secretly executed in Dizelabad Prison in Kermanshah by the Islamic Republic of Iran, without the knowledge of his family.
Reza Rasaei was sentenced to death by Mohammad Rasoul Haq-Nejati, head of Branch 2 of the Criminal Court of Kermanshah Province. The verdict was swiftly upheld by the Supreme Court within approximately two weeks. Rasaei was accused of murdering Nader Birami, the IRGC Intelligence Chief in the city of Sahneh, in a completely opaque process based on fabricated scenarios constructed by security agencies.
It is noteworthy that Nader Birami was killed on November 18, 2022 (27 Aban 1401), during the annual ceremony commemorating Seyed Khalil Alinejad, a former spiritual leader of the Yarsani community, which turned violent following a raid by security forces.
On the anniversary of Reza Rasaei’s execution, the Hana Human Rights Organization strongly condemns this inhumane punishment and affirms that the judicial process in his case was in clear violation of international human rights standards for a fair trial. Even under the minimal legal standards of the Islamic Republic of Iran, his defense rights were not respected.
