Hana Human Rights Organization – Monthly Report on the Human Rights Situation in Kurdistan May 2025

The Statistics Center of Hana Human Rights Organization has published its monthly report on the human rights situation in Kurdistan. The data presented in this report has been collected through field investigations involving victims, their families, and available documentation. All information has been subsequently verified through independent sources. Therefore, this report only includes cases whose authenticity Hana has been able to confirm with certainty.

According to the collected data, the majority of human rights violations pertain to civil and political rights, particularly in the areas of personal freedoms, the prohibition of arbitrary detention, and the right to life.

Arbitrary Arrests:

Hana has documented 54 cases of arbitrary arrests of Kurdish citizens across various cities in Kurdistan by the security forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Based on Hana’s findings, most of these arrests were carried out arbitrarily and without summons or judicial warrants. The majority were linked to accusations of collaboration with Kurdish opposition parties, environmental activism, women’s rights advocacy, civil society activities, and media-related work. Among those arrested were 9 women and 3 clergymen (Mamostas).

Right to Life & Executions:

At least 22 Kurdish individuals were executed in various prisons across Iran. Among them, 13 were executed on charges of intentional murder and 9 on drug-related charges. According to Hana’s report, the number of executions in May increased by 175% compared to April.

Sentences:

Revolutionary Courts issued a total of 442 months of imprisonment for 14 individuals in May, and all of these sentences have been enforced.

Kolbars and Border Traders:

May witnessed extrajudicial killings of kolbars and border traders by border and security forces of the Islamic Republic. At least 6 individuals were killed or injured. Among them, 3 were killed and 3 injured due to direct fire from security forces. One kolbar was also arrested and sentenced to 5 years in prison.

Suicides:

At least 13 individuals — 2 women and 11 men — committed suicide due to poverty and unemployment in various cities and villages across Kurdistan. This marks a 45% increase compared to the previous month.

Gender-Based Violence and Femicide:

The monthly report also highlights the continuation of honor-based violence and femicide in different cities. During the past month, 6 women were killed by male family members — including husbands, fathers, or brothers — mainly under the pretext of “honor.” In related cases, 2 men were also killed.

Labor Accidents:

Workplace incidents, mostly due to a lack of safety standards and non-compliance with International Labour Organization regulations, led to the deaths of at least 5 workers on the job.

Landmine Explosions:

In May, two individuals were killed and one injured due to landmine explosions. All victims were soldiers affiliated with the armed forces of the regime.

Hana’s Monthly Assessment:

Hana believes that the Islamic Republic, facing both internal and external crises, is increasing the implementation of death sentences to intimidate the public and prevent widespread protests across the country.
