Hana Report on the Execution of Mohammadamin Biglari and Shahin Vahedparast Two Detainees of the January 2026 Protests in Iran

According to state affiliated media, the death sentences of Mohammadamin Biglari (19) and Shahin Vahedparast, two individuals detained during the January 2026 protests, have been carried out in connection with a case involving the burning of the Basij Base 185 Shahid Mahmoud Kaveh in eastern Tehran.

According to available information, the two were tried in Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran, presided over by Abolghasem Salavati, and were sentenced to death on charges including “moharebeh” (enmity against God) and actions against national security. Judicial authorities claimed that the charges were related to the arson attack on the base and attempts to access its armory.

However, the handling of this case once again highlights serious concerns regarding the lack of fair trial standards in political and security cases in Iran. Trials in Revolutionary Courts, the use of broad and severe charges such as “moharebeh,” lack of effective and independent access to legal counsel, ambiguity surrounding the quality of evidence and the methods used to obtain confessions, and insufficient transparency in proceedings all severely undermine the legitimacy of such verdicts from a human rights perspective.

The right to life, as enshrined in Article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, is a fundamental and non derogable right. The use of the death penalty, especially in cases where proceedings are marked by serious violations of fair trial guarantees, constitutes a breach of the international obligations of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Furthermore, under Article 14 of the same covenant, every individual has the right to a fair, public, and independent trial, rights that have repeatedly been reported as violated in political and security cases in Iran.

The Hana Human Rights Organization condemns these executions and warns of a new wave of executions in Iran, in which the Islamic Republic, under wartime and security conditions, is exposing protesters to the harshest punishments through security related charges. This exploitation of wartime and security conditions represents a grave threat to the lives of political prisoners, detained protesters, and all individuals facing similar charges.

It is worth noting that Amirhossein Hatami (18) had previously been executed in a similar case related to the January 2026 protests, further intensifying concerns about the escalating use of executions against protesters under the guise of security charges.
