The Hana Human Rights Organization has issued a report warning of the intensification of systematic human rights violations in Iran, stating that the Islamic Republic, through its budgetary and economic policies, follows a model of repression that simultaneously targets citizens’ livelihoods and their right to life.
According to official data released by the Statistical Center of Iran and reflected in Donyaye Eqtesad newspaper, inflation reached unprecedented levels in January 2026. The point-to-point household inflation for this month was reported at 60.0 percent, meaning that, on average, households spent 60 percent more than in January of the previous year for the same set of goods and services. This indicator rose by 7.4 percentage points compared to the previous month.
Additionally, the monthly inflation for January 2026 was 7.9 percent, with food and beverage items rising by 13.7 percent. The annual inflation rate (12 months ending in January) was 44.6 percent, highlighting the ongoing heavy economic pressure on Iranian households. These figures clearly reflect a sharp decline in purchasing power, growing poverty, and limited access to basic necessities for a large portion of society.
HANA’s analysis also shows that a significant portion of the country’s public resources, instead of supporting citizens’ livelihoods and strengthening the healthcare system, has been allocated to security, military, and crowd-control equipment. This diversion of resources creates a direct link between economic pressure and political repression, effectively funding the control and suppression of public protests through the weakening of general livelihoods.
The organization also warns of an escalating public health crisis. Reports indicate widespread shortages of essential medicines and medical equipment, as well as the healthcare system’s inability to meet the basic needs of patients, including protest-related injuries and chronic illnesses. This situation results from the systematic prioritization of security expenditures over public health and welfare.
HANA emphasizes that the simultaneous occurrence of runaway inflation, structural poverty, medical deprivation, and violent suppression of protests represents a coherent pattern of violations of citizens’ economic, social, and civil rights. The continuation of this trend has reached extensive and systematic levels, producing consequences that are deeply concerning and cannot be ignored from a human rights perspective.
The Hana Human Rights Organization calls on the United Nations, international human rights bodies, and governments to move beyond expressions of concern and take effective, practical measures to halt this trend, support victims, and hold perpetrators of human rights violations in Iran accountable.
