December 6 is marked as the Day of Commemoration for the Victims of the Shinabad Tragedy underscoring the urgent need for structural reforms within Iran’s education system

The Hana Human Rights Organization, in commemoration of 6 December, the Day of Shinabad Girls, honors the memory of two students who lost their lives and 29 students who were injured in the fire at the girls’ school in Shinabad village, Piranshahr, in 2012. The organization emphasizes that this tragedy was caused by a lack of safety standards, insufficient oversight, and structural neglect of school conditions, particularly in Kurdish regions, and constitutes a clear violation of children’s fundamental right to safe education.

Hana Human Rights Organization recalls that the Shinabad incident was not an exceptional event, but part of a series of fires and deadly accidents in schools across the country, which have occurred both before and after this tragedy. The continuation of such incidents highlights the inability and negligence of responsible authorities in fulfilling their legal duties and ensuring the safety of students.

The organization stresses the need for accountability of relevant officials, full compensation for the material and moral losses of the victims, and the mandatory implementation of safety standards in all schools across the country. Hana Human Rights Organization underlines that commemorating the Day of Shinabad Girls is not only a tribute to the victims but also a legal and ethical demand to guarantee the right to safe, equal, and humane education for all children.
