The most significant factor contributing to the rise of violence against women in Iran is the lack of protective laws for women. The Islamic Republic interferes in areas that are part of women’s private lives and fundamental freedoms, such as freedom of dress, depriving them of their essential rights. However, in domains where women and children require governmental intervention for protection against domestic violence, the regime remains silent, labeling these issues as part of the private sphere.
This lack of governmental and legislative intervention to support women has resulted in the emergence of exclusive powers under notions such as “honor” and “family dignity.” Consequently, women are left without adequate legal protection, subject to the authority of fathers, husbands, or brothers.
Granting absolute power under the pretext of family privacy ultimately leads to heinous crimes like these against women.
