UN Special Rapporteurs Call for Immediate Halt to Finger Amputation Punishment for Three Prisoners in Iran

According to received reports, on Thursday, April 10, 2025, two United Nations Special Rapporteurs, Mai Sato and Alice Jill Edwards, issued a statement urging immediate action to stop the execution of sentences involving the amputation of four fingers from the right hands of three prisoners: Hadi Rostami, Mehdi Sharifian, and Mehdi Shahivand.

These prisoners, currently held in Orumiyeh Prison, were arrested in August 2017 on charges of “theft” and were sentenced to amputation following an unfair trial in 2019.

In their joint statement, the UN officials declared:
“These planned amputations are a clear violation of the absolute prohibition against torture and cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment. Iran must immediately put an end to this severe corporal punishment that is contrary to international human rights standards.”

Hana Human Rights Organization, while condemning this action, has called for the immediate revocation of these sentences and a fair review of the situation of the prisoners.
