Two Kurdish Political Prisoners Sentenced to Death in Bukan

Human Rights Organization HANA has reported that two Kurdish political prisoners, “Mohammad Faraji” and “Raouf Sheikh-Maroofi,” detained as part of the (Jin, Jiyan, Azadi) movement, have been sentenced to death by the judiciary of the Islamic Republic of Iran after nearly three years of imprisonment and legal uncertainty.

According to the report, Raouf Sheikh-Maroofi, 24, and Mohammad Faraji, 23, both from Bukan and held in the Central Prison of the city, were sentenced to death by the First Branch of the Mahabad Revolutionary Court on charges including moharebeh (waging war against God) and spreading corruption on earth. Hearings for these charges were held separately during the fall of this year, and the death sentences were communicated to them on Tuesday, 24 February 2026, in Bukan Central Prison.

Raouf Sheikh-Maroofi was arrested on the evening of Monday, 26 December 2022, and Mohammad Faraji on Tuesday, 21 February 2023, both violently detained by the Intelligence Ministry forces in Bukan and transferred to the agency’s detention center. On Saturday, 10 June 2023, after several months of interrogation, both were moved from the Orumiyeh Intelligence detention center to Bukan Central Prison, where they have remained in legal limbo ever since.

According to received information, Mohammad Faraji had previously been detained and, after temporary release, was re-arrested by security forces. Available reports indicate that Orumiyeh Intelligence agents contacted him by phone, posing as a client, and asked him—while working as a car mechanic—to visit a specific location for car repairs, where he was then apprehended.

It is noteworthy that during their detention at the Orumiyeh Intelligence detention center, both prisoners were subjected to severe physical and psychological torture aimed at extracting forced confessions.
