According to reports received by the Hana Human Rights Organization:
Leila Azizi and Naser Mahmoudi, two Kurdish political asylum seekers, were arrested by Turkish police while en route to a European country and are currently being held at the Agrin detention camp.
This politically active couple had been members of a Kurdish political party in Iran for several years. They were arrested and imprisoned in Turkey several months ago while attempting to travel to Europe. A few days ago, Turkish authorities transferred them to the Agrin camp with the intention of deporting them to Iran.
Leila Azizi is from Saqqez and Naser Mahmoudi is from Bukan. Both were active in a Kurdish party in Iran for over two years. If deported, they face the risk of receiving harsh and inhumane sentences from the Islamic Republic. Therefore, their lives and safety are now in the hands of the Turkish government.
We call on the Turkish authorities responsible for refugee affairs to cancel the deportation order for these two political asylum seekers. Deporting individuals whose lives are at risk in their home country is a clear violation of international treaties and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The Hana Human Rights Organization, emphasizing the principles of international conventions, calls for the immediate halt of the deportation process and urges the Turkish government to respect human rights in dealing with refugees.
