The repeated summons of Saman Ghazali a Kurdish journalist and civil activist in Mahabad

Hana Human Rights Organization has learned that on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, Kurdish journalist and civil activist Saman Ghazali from Mahabad was summoned by phone to the Public Security Police of “FARAJA” in the city and subjected to several hours of interrogation.

According to Hana’s sources, in recent days he was called in by phone and, after appearing at the security agency, was questioned regarding the anniversary of the “Women, Life, Freedom” movement and his political posts on social media. He was also pressured to sign a written pledge not to continue his political and social activities.

Reports indicate that Saman Ghazali has previously been arrested and prosecuted multiple times by security forces in past years. On September 25, 2022, he was detained after appearing at the Mahabad Intelligence Office and transferred to the Orumiyeh Intelligence Detention Center. After two months, he was released on bail on November 26, 2022.

In December 2022, the Mahabad Revolutionary Court sentenced him to three months of imprisonment, five months of suspended imprisonment, and a one-year ban from journalism on charges of “propaganda against the regime.”

Earlier, in September 2020, he was arrested over his journalistic activities and accused of cooperating with a Kurdish opposition party. The Mahabad Revolutionary Court sentenced him to two years of imprisonment, part of which he served in Mahabad Prison, before being released on June 30, 2021.

Hana Human Rights Organization expresses concern over the ongoing security pressures against Kurdish journalists and civil activists, stressing that such actions are a violation of freedom of expression and the international human rights obligations of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
