According to information received by the Hana Human Rights Organization, on the evening of Sunday, 16 November 2025, an individual named Jalal Hosseini opened fire on his wife’s family, killing his wife, Namam Farhush, the mother of two children, and his father-in-law, Khaled Farhush, both residents of Mahabad, in the Municipal Lands Area of the city.
A knowledgeable source told Hana that Namam Farhush and her husband, Jalal Hosseini, had long been experiencing serious marital disputes and domestic violence, and that their divorce case was ongoing in the family court of Mahabad.
According to Hana’s investigation, after committing the murders, the perpetrator fled the crime scene and was identified and arrested at the Turkey border. However, during detention, he attempted suicide by ingesting pills and died before being transferred to the hospital.
The Hana Human Rights Organization strongly condemns these killings and stresses once again that the absence of effective protective laws for women is a primary factor behind such tragedies. Granting men legal authority as the “head of the family” under the Civil Code, as well as the existence of discriminatory and dehumanizing jurisprudential concepts such as “tamkin (obedience to the husband)” and the “disobedient wife (noshuz),” are among the main drivers of so-called honor killings in Iran.
