The fourth detention order of Chiako Rezaei a Kurdish athlete was extended amid legal ambiguity

Hana Human Rights Organization has learned that the detention order of Chiako Rezaei, a Kurdish athlete from Sanandaj County, has been extended for the fourth time. This extension comes despite the fact that he has been held for more than 110 days in solitary confinement at the detention center of the Intelligence Office in Sanandaj, while no reliable information about his physical condition or legal status has been made available.

According to an informed source, Mr. Rezaei’s detention order, which had previously been valid until 1 December 2025, did not lead to his release upon its expiration. Instead, without any clear legal explanation, it was again extended until 10 January 2026. These repeated and non-transparent extensions have intensified concerns regarding the status of his case and his fate.

The source also emphasized that Chiako Rezaei’s family has received no clear information about their son’s legal situation since his arrest. Despite repeated visits to security and judicial authorities, they have faced complete silence and unanswered requests.

Earlier in the handling of the case, a bail order in the amount of one billion tomans was issued for Mr. Rezaei’s release. However, this order has not been enforced, and he remains in detention, further compounding the legal ambiguities surrounding the case.

It should be noted that Chiako Rezaei was arrested on 5 September 2025 by security forces without the presentation of a judicial warrant.

His prolonged detention in solitary confinement at the Sanandaj Intelligence Office detention center, lack of access to a lawyer, and deprivation of regular contact with his family have raised serious concerns about his physical and psychological well-being.

Prolonged solitary confinement, repeated and non-transparent extensions of the detention order, failure to enforce the bail decision, and denial of basic defense rights constitute clear violations of fair trial principles and the fundamental rights of the accused. Hana Human Rights Organization, while expressing deep concern over the situation of this Kurdish athlete, calls for immediate clarification of Chiako Rezaei’s legal status, enforcement of issued judicial decisions, guaranteed access to legal counsel and family contact, and an end to arbitrary detention and unjustified extensions of his detention order.
