According to reports received by Hana Human Rights Organization, the death sentence of Mehrab Abdollahzadeh, one of those detained during the “Jin, Jiyan, Azadi” (Woman, Life, Freedom) movement, has been upheld by Branch 9 of Iran’s Supreme Court, and the verdict has been formally communicated to him in recent days.
Mehrab Abdollahzadeh, 27 years old, son of Mohammadamin, from Khoshalan village, Orumiyeh, and a resident of the Vali Asr neighborhood, was previously sentenced to death by Branch One of the Orumiyeh Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Najafzadeh, on charges of “baghi” (armed rebellion). The verdict was communicated to him in Orumiyeh Central Prison in late September 2024.
Mehrab Abdollahzadeh was arrested on 22 October 2022 in the Vali Asr neighborhood of Orumiyeh by security forces and was subsequently transferred to one of the security detention centers in the city.
According to reports received, during his detention, Mehrab Abdollahzadeh was subjected to severe physical and psychological torture by security interrogators. The handling of his case has been entirely unfair and conducted without adherence to the principles of a fair trial and without access to even the minimum rights recognized for a defendant, including under the domestic laws of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
It should also be noted that Mehrab Abdollahzadeh’s family has been subjected to pressure and threats by security institutions in an effort to prevent public reporting on this case.
Hana Human Rights Organization, while expressing deep concern over the risk of the secret execution of Mehrab Abdollahzadeh, calls for the immediate intervention of human rights organizations and increased pressure on the Iranian government. Hana emphasizes that none of the minimum standards of a fair criminal trial were observed in Abdollahzadeh’s prosecution and that he has been deprived of the most basic rights of a defendant since the moment of his arrest, even under the laws of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
