Suspicious Death of Kurdish Political Prisoner Qader Rasoulpour on the Eve of His Release

According to Hana Human Rights Organization:
On Friday, July 18, 2025, Qader Rasoulpour, a Kurdish political prisoner from Mahabad, died under suspicious circumstances at Mahabad Central Prison on the last day of his sentence.

According to Hana’s sources, Rasoulpour’s family, who had prepared to welcome him upon release, were suddenly informed of his death. Prison authorities told the family that he had “suffered a seizure while taking a shower and died.” However, his relatives reject this claim, stating that Qader Rasoulpour had no prior medical conditions or history of illness.

The 53-year-old political prisoner had visited with his family just two days before his death and had told them that he was due to be released on Friday. His body was transferred to the forensic medical center in Orumiyeh for autopsy, but no clear or official report has been released regarding the cause of death so far.

Qader Rasoulpour was a former member of the Komala Party in the 1980s and had previously spent six years in prison from 1984 to 1990. He was arrested again by security forces in February 2025 and was sentenced by a branch of the Revolutionary Court to six months in prison on charges of “propaganda against the regime.”

Hana Human Rights Organization expresses grave concern over the suspicious death of this Kurdish political prisoner and calls for an independent investigation, immediate clarification of the cause of death, and accountability from prison authorities and the judiciary of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
