On the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the Hana Human Rights Organization emphasizes the necessity for governments to uphold their legal and moral obligations toward millions of persons with disabilities. This day serves as a reminder of the responsibility that national laws and international instruments place upon states: despite the imperative of ensuring equality, dignity, and non-discriminatory access for all individuals, persons with disabilities continue to face serious barriers in education, healthcare, rehabilitation, employment, and public services—challenges that, in times of economic hardship and crises, further exacerbate their vulnerability.
The Organization calls for stronger implementation of protective legislation, transparent allocation of resources, effective oversight of responsible institutions, and the elimination of any form of discrimination in the provision of public services. It also underscores the essential and commendable role of civil society and charitable organizations in reinforcing the social support network, particularly in the areas of rehabilitation and livelihood assistance.
Hana reiterates that the realization of the rights of persons with disabilities is an integral part of human rights as a whole, and fulfilling obligations in this regard constitutes a key measure of the effectiveness and justice-orientation of any system of governance.
