Statement by 120 Political and Civil Activists of Kurdistan:Recognize the Right to Protest and Release the Detainees

One hundred and twenty civil, political, and human rights activists from Kurdistan, in a statement expressing their support for the people’s civil and peaceful protests, have called for the release of detainees and for the people’s voices to be heard. The full text of the statement by the Kurdish activists is as follows:

In recent days, as protests against rising prices and economic hardship have spread across several cities in the country and a number of our fellow citizens have lost their lives, a wave of arrests has begun. This trend is particularly noticeable in Kurdistan and other parts of the country. It is highly surprising that, on the one hand, the government spokesperson states that the right to protest is recognized, while on the other hand, security-oriented crackdowns and the denial of the right to peaceful assembly and protest present a contradictory picture.

We believe that such responses to civil protests are contrary to the conventions and fundamental principles of civil and political rights that have been accepted by the Islamic Republic. We, a group of civil, political, and human rights activists from Kurdistan, while once again emphasizing the right to protest and the necessity of hearing the people’s demands and grievances, and expressing our sympathy with the families of those who have recently lost their lives, call for the release of all recently detained individuals and for a response to the rightful demands of the people.
