According to reports received by the Hana Human Rights Organization, on Wednesday January 8, 2025, a soldier identified as Matin Saeedi Zangakani, son of Jamshid and a resident of the village Dizaj-Siavash near Orumiyeh, ended his life while on mandatory military service in Kermanshah. During a guard shift, he committed suicide using his official firearm.
Mandatory military service in the Islamic Republic of Iran has become an additional burden for many families, especially those from low-income backgrounds. Every male is required to enlist in military service upon turning 18.
Under unjust conditions, exemptions from military service are sold based on specific criteria, with the cost increasing alongside educational qualifications. This practice has left financially struggling individuals, particularly those grappling with poverty and unemployment, unable to afford exemption, forcing them into mandatory service.
