Issuance of death and Ta’zir imprisonment sentences for two Kurdish prisoners in Orumiyeh

Hana: In recent days, two Kurdish citizens, Naser Bakrzadeh from Orumiyeh and Shahin Vasaf from Salmas, whose death sentences had previously been overturned by the Supreme Court and referred back to a court of equal rank, were, after a retrial in Branch Two of the Orumiyeh Revolutionary Court, sentenced to death and 10 years of Ta’zir imprisonment, respectively.

According to the report, these two political prisoners were summoned in recent days to the Execution Office of the prison, where their new sentences were officially communicated. Based on the verdict, Naser Bakrzadeh was once again sentenced to death for (espionage for Israel), while Shahin Vasaf received 10 years of Ta’zir imprisonment for the same charge.

The trial session for these two prisoners, who were tried separately for (espionage for Israel), was held in July–August 2025 under Judge Shahini.

It is worth noting that Naser Bakrzadeh, a 25-year-old from Orumiyeh, was first arrested on August 9, 2023 by the Intelligence Organization of the IRGC and released after a few weeks on bail, but was re-arrested on January 2, 2024. After several months in the Al-Mahdi detention center of the IRGC in Orumiyeh, he was transferred to the city’s central prison. On November 2, 2024, he was sentenced to death by Branch One of the Orumiyeh Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Najafzadeh. This sentence was overturned by Branch 39 of the Supreme Court in Farvardin 1404 (March–April 2025) after an appeal by his lawyers, and the case was referred to a court of equal rank.

Similarly, Shahin Vasaf from Salmas was arrested on September 21, 2022 by the Ministry of Intelligence in Orumiyeh and was held for several months in the city’s intelligence detention center, subjected to physical and psychological torture to extract forced confessions, before being transferred to Orumiyeh Central Prison. On October 3, 2023, he was sentenced to death by Branch Three of the Orumiyeh Revolutionary Court in the absence of his appointed lawyer. This sentence was overturned by the Supreme Court in March–April 2024 and referred to a court of equal rank.
