Hana’s Concern Over the Case of Mehrab Abdollazadeh, Kurdish Political Prisoner Sentenced to Death in the Supreme Court

According to information received by the Hana Human Rights Organization, the appeal of Mehrab Abdollazadeh, a Kurdish political prisoner sentenced to death, has been referred to Branch 9 of the Supreme Court of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Mehrab Abdollazadeh, 26 years old, son of Mohammad Amin, is a resident of the village of “Khoshalan” in Orumiyeh and lives in Valiasr Township. He was sentenced to death by Branch 1 of the Orumiyeh Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge “Najafzadeh,” on charges of “rebellion (baghi)” and “participation in the intentional killing” of a Basij member named “Seyed Abbas Fatemiyeh.” This sentence was officially communicated to Abdollazadeh in Orumiyeh Central Prison in late September 2024.

Mehrab Abdollazadeh was arrested on October 22, 2022, in Valiasr Township, Orumiyeh, by security forces and subsequently transferred to a secret security detention facility in Orumiyeh. During his detention, he was subjected to severe physical and psychological torture by security interrogators. He was later sentenced to death by Branch 1 of the Orumiyeh Revolutionary Court in a completely unfair trial, without access to even the minimum rights granted to defendants under the laws of the Islamic Republic.

It is noteworthy that Abdollazadeh’s family has been continuously threatened and pressured by security agencies to prevent them from reporting on his case.

The Hana Human Rights Organization expresses deep concern over the case of Mehrab Abdollazadeh and calls for the international prosecution and sanctioning of Judge Najafzadeh, the head of Branch 1 of the Orumiyeh Revolutionary Court, due to his repeated human rights violations against political defendants and the issuance of multiple death sentences, particularly following the “Jin, Jiyan, Azadi” (Woman, Life, Freedom) uprising. In Abdollazadeh’s case, Judge Najafzadeh issued the death sentence without allowing the defendant a proper legal defense in a criminal trial. Previously, Hana was the first organization to publish Judge Najafzadeh’s image and records of his severe human rights violations.
