Hana Human Rights Organization expresses its concern over the situation of the workers at Arak Aluminum Company (IRALCO). The widespread strike of these workers, which began more than a month ago, has today—September 2, 2025—entered its 35th consecutive day. It is estimated that around four thousand workers are participating in this protest movement.
The workers’ protests initially began due to the failure to implement a revision of the job classification plan, but in recent months have taken on broader dimensions. Workers have reported problems such as delays in wage payments, suspension of benefits and overtime, excessive tax deductions, non-renewal of supplementary health insurance, shortened contract terms, and a sharp decline in workplace safety standards. According to them, worn-out equipment and the lack of a plan for essential repairs of production furnaces and overhead cranes have put workers’ lives at risk, already leading to painful workplace accidents and even the death of one worker.
In their statements, IRALCO workers have stressed that no pressure or obstruction will deter them from pursuing their rights. Their main demands include:
- Immediate revision of the job classification plan,
- Ensuring workplace safety,
- Timely and regular payment of wages,
- Reopening of closed workshops,
- Organizational restructuring without layoffs,
- And restoration of all lost entitlements.
Hana Human Rights Organization reminds that the continuation of this situation places the physical health of thousands of workers and the job security of their families at serious risk. From a human rights perspective, it constitutes a violation of the right to life, the right to health, and the right to a safe and fair working environment.
Hana emphasizes that strike and peaceful protest are fundamental human and labor rights. Therefore, Hana Human Rights Organization calls on the company’s management and the responsible authorities to immediately begin dialogue with workers’ representatives, heed their legitimate demands, and take urgent and practical measures to eliminate safety hazards and guarantee the labor and human rights of the workers.
