Farzin Maroufi, a 22-year-old youth from Mahabad and a management student living in Tehran, was killed on November 30, 2022. He had taken to the streets with his friends, alongside many young people across Iran, to express their joy after the defeat of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s national football team in the Qatar World Cup, during the nationwide protests sparked by the state killing of Jina Amini. In Tehran’s Ekbatan neighborhood, he was shot in the head with live ammunition by Islamic Republic security forces.
Security agencies did not allow Farzin Maroufi’s body to be transferred to Mahabad. Ultimately, under pressure from these same agencies, he was buried in Tehran on December 2, 2022, with only a small number of close family members present. The family was also denied permission to hold a memorial ceremony, and security forces removed the banners and mourning fabrics that had been placed in front of their home.
