In recent days, a protest was held outside a courthouse where hearings related to immigration cases were taking place, with the participation of members of the association “Tre Dita.” The protest was organized by Meyson Majidi, a Kurdish activist and the head of the association, in opposition to the criminalization of political asylum seekers.
Protesters held up images and chanted slogans such as “Asylum seekers are not criminals – We are all smugglers”, objecting to judicial and media narratives that equate asylum seekers with human traffickers.
During the demonstration, Meyson Majidi emphasized the forced nature of migration and asylum, stating:
“Asylum seekers are not criminals. The term ‘smuggler’ is meaningless for those who risk their lives to reach safety. They are victims of discriminatory global policies and structures.”
She also highlighted the case of Marjan Jamali, an Iranian asylum-seeking woman who was forced to flee the country due to the patriarchal laws of the Islamic Republic.
Majidi added:
“Marjan is not a political figure; she is a woman who simply wanted to live in safety with her eight-year-old son. Laws such as the automatic transfer of child custody to the father after the age of seven pushed her into insecurity.”
Meyson Majidi further referenced the 2024 annual report by the Hana Human Rights Organization on the human rights situation in Iranian Kurdistan, which stated that the Islamic Republic of Iran executed at least 124 Kurdish citizens during that year. Hana noted that this number only includes documented cases, and the actual number of executions is believed to be much higher.
In addition to these executions, four Kurdish prisoners died under unclear circumstances in Iranian prisons in 2024, with no official explanation provided regarding the causes of their deaths.
Furthermore, according to the report, at least 41 Kurds were killed and 216 others injured by direct gunfire from Iranian border forces.
