Suicide of a Death Row Inmate in Qezel Hesar Prison, Karaj

According to information received by the Hana Human Rights Organization, on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, a death row inmate identified as Mohammad Koushki, 26 years old and a resident of Kuhdasht, committed suicide in Qezel Hesar Prison, Karaj, ending his life.

Reports indicate that Mohammad Koushki had been sentenced to death on charges related to drug offenses.

As of the time of this report, no official statement has been issued by prison authorities regarding the suicide of this inmate. A source familiar with the matter told Hana that the “emotional distress and minute-by-minute trauma of facing death” likely compelled the individual to take his own life before the death sentence could be carried out.

The Hana Human Rights Organization has consistently condemned the Islamic Republic of Iran’s penal policies and its use of the death penalty, describing it as an irreversible and inhumane punishment.
